We all know protein helps to build muscle and that muscle burns fat. Protein also burns significant calories through the digestion process and helps you to feel satisfied longer so you don’t consume as many calories throughout the day.
How much protein do you need?
1 gram = 4 calories; USDA recommends 10-35% of calories come from protein for adults, 10-30% for children ages 4-18, and 5-20% for children ages 3 and under.
For a sedentary adult female age 31-50 (i.e. me) consuming the USDA recommended 1800 calories per day, this would equal 45-158 grams protein per day.
For an active adult male age 31-50 (i.e. my husband) consuming the USDA recommended 2800-3000 calories per day, this would equal 70-263 grams of protein per day. [Read more…]
